Alan Tomkins, a well-known and respected figure within the British equestrian industry, passed away peacefully on 29 June.
He was 83, and leaves a legacy of dedication, craftsmanship and kindness that will be remembered for generations.
Alan was born on 30 September 1942. He grew up in Walsall in the West Midlands and attended Joseph Leckie School in the town.
In his mid-twenties, he began what would become a lifelong career with Vale Brothers, manufacturer of high-quality horse grooming products. Through hard work, vision and determination, Alan rose to lead the business.
With Alan at the helm, Vale Brothers continued the time-honoured craft of producing hand-drawn horse brushes.
Simultaneously, he embraced modern manufacturing methods and innovative production techniques, ensuring the business remained competitive in a changing world without ever compromising its standards.
Alan was instrumental in expanding Vale Brothers’ reach too, building a strong reputation across the UK and throughout international markets. He helped establish and grow brands such as Equerry and Stablemate which became immensely popular with equestrian consumers.
Royal recognition
One of the proudest milestones of Alan’s career came when Vale Brothers was honoured with a Royal Warrant. It was a fitting tribute to the dedication, integrity and excellence that Alan brought to his work.
After retiring in 2001, Alan embraced a new chapter of life and spent the next 25 years enjoying the company of his family and friends. Those years were filled with laughter, treasured memories, and the quiet satisfaction of knowing he had built both a successful career and a wonderful life.
Alan will be remembered not only for his business achievements but also for his warmth, humility and unwavering work ethic.
His contribution to the equestrian industry, particularly through Vale Brothers, left an indelible mark. More importantly, he will be remembered by those who knew him as a devoted family man, a loyal friend and a true gentleman.
Alan will be fondly remembered and missed by his wife Pam and other members of his family along with the many friends he made in the equestrian industry in the UK and around the world.
