“Always kind and supportive.”
Norma Smithson, an inspiration and friend to so many in the equestrian trade, passed away last week. She was 87.
In the early part of her long career, Norma worked in sales for the West Yorkshire based company Stylo Matchmakers.
She then joined riding hat manufacturer Champion where she became renowned as a hat fitting expert. Alongside, she helped various suppliers and retailers with everything from staff training to sales promotions.
In 2001, Norma became the British Equestrian Trade Association’s (BETA’s) first field officer. With her wide-ranging knowledge, far-reaching contacts and unwavering enthusiasm, she made the role a great success.
Norma continued to be involved with BETA, in particular via its rider safety equipment training courses.
“Norma represented the heart and soul of the trade,” said BETA’s executive director Claire Williams.
“She was kind and warm, and so supportive of me personally and everything BETA did. She genuinely wanted everyone to succeed.”
Even after her retirement, Norma remained a regular visitor to BETA International including attending last year’s show.
At the many social events to which she was invited, such as the annual BETA Gala Dinner, Norma was invariably accompanied by her husband Harold. The devoted couple recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
