“They’re too costly to disrespect.”

Look after your body protector and it will look after you…

That’s the latest salvo in the British Equestrian Trade Association’s (BETA’s) Summer of Safety social media campaign.

BETA is urging riders to cherish their body protectors with practical care and storage tips - many of which benefit garments in retail environments too.

“From the high-tech protective foam to the rigorous testing protocols to meet safety standards, great expertise goes into developing body protectors” says Claire Williams from BETA.

“Although they’re designed to be robust enough to take the knocks in a fall, these are precision products that need and deserve to be cared for correctly.

“And, although you can’t put a price on safety, body protectors are too costly to disrespect.”

BETA has teamed up with manufacturer member FOMO Protection to offer advice for riders and retailers with body protectors in their care.

Breathe easy: Don't trap body protectors in sweaty bags. Hang them somewhere dry and well-ventilated to keep them fresh and fungus-free.

No crush zone: Don't store things on top of body protectors as it may damage the protective foam. Store them flat or hang by the shoulders.

Clean it: After a ride, wipe the body protector with a damp cloth to remove sweat, mud and dust. Machine-wash removable outer covers.

Keep it cool: Excessive heat can ruin the materials. Store body protectors away from direct sunlight and radiators.

Hang it up: Use a sturdy hanger or gear hook to store each garment at home or in-store - makes an impressive retail display too.

Regular check-up: Used body protectors should be given the once-over for cracks, wear or compressed foam. If in doubt, replace.

  • BETA’s Summer of Safety continues across social media covering rider gear, tack, the stable yard, feed room, horse health and road safety.
