Two deciding factors come out on top.
Absorbency and low dust are the top two deciding factors when it comes to choosing bedding.
Meanwhile, a third of consumers who swapped bedding in the last year did so to save money.
The findings are from a survey by Bedmax of 1,179 consumers responsible for 3,250 horses. Respondents comprised users of the branded bedding and others.
Overall, the most popular bedding choice was purpose-made shavings, used by 45% of respondents.
Straw was used by one in ten, while straw pellets accounted for 9%. A “significant number” of owners reported using mixed or layered bedding systems, often to manage costs.
When it comes to where they like to buy their bedding, most horse owners prefer to shop with their local retailer rather than online.
“Owners continue to rely heavily on their local retailers for advice and consistency of supply,” says Tim Smalley, managing director of Bedmax which has always been sold through the trade.
“This survey shows very clearly is that performance still matters more than price.
Absorbency, low dust, hygiene and reliability remain the top priorities, and retailers play a crucial role in helping customers choose the right bedding for their horses’ health.
