Thirty-three jobs lost as organisation slims down.
Redwings Horse Sanctuary has closed two of its five visitor centres
Last month, Spillers - the feed brand that’s supported the charity for more than 20 years - donated £5,000 to help Redwings “at a difficult time.”
The charity blames rising costs for having to shut Redwings Mountains in Forfar, Angus, and Redwings Oxhill in Warwickshire.
Resident equines have been moved to its Norfolk sites and 33 staff members have been made redundant across the two closed sites.
“Neither of these centres took in rescue cases directly, and so the closure does not affect Redwings’ ability to rescue horses from anywhere in the country, as we have always done,” said Redwings in a statement.
“However, these closures do save vital and significant operating costs long-term.
“Businesses and charities across the country are struggling severely – Redwings is certainly not alone.”
Redwings had already cited eating into its reserves as “unsustainable.” A period of financial consultation was followed by last week’s two-centre closure announcement.
“We have been overwhelmed by kind messages, suggestions and donations, and we are so very grateful,” said the charity.
