AXE FALLS ON SYMBOL OF LEATHER INDUSTRY’S HERITAGE

Disappointment for campaigners who hoped to save it.

Plans to close Walsall Leather Museum have been rubberstamped by the town’s council – much to the fury of local campaigners.

The Walsall Leather Museum is to be ousted from its home in an original 1888 leather factory.

Walsall Council says the museum will be moved to a town centre location yet to be named or purchased.

But industry insiders have told the BBC they’re “gravely disappointed” at the move.

The original 1888 leather factory building - which has housed the museum on Walsall’s Littleton Street West for 37 years - is to be leased by Walsall College as a centre for adults with special needs.

Earlier this year, a petition was signed by around 2,000 campaigners calling for the museum to be preserved.

They say the building itself is as much part of Walsall’s leather industry heritage as the thousands of artefacts it houses.

Throughout its operation, Walsall Leather Museum has provided an educational hub alongside its exhibits.
