Bedmax’s managing director Tim Smalley and operations manager Olivia Leyland are in training for a 400-mile bike ride.

Their epic trip is part of Bedmax’s 25th anniversary celebrations during which the bedding company aims to raise £25,000 for a good cause that saved their colleague Tony Robinson’s life.

Launching Bedmax’s 25th anniversary £25k fund-raiser for the Freeman Hospital Heart and Lung Transplant Association (FHLTA) are, from left, Bedmax’s Olivia Leyland, Keith Forster and Mary Forster from the FHLTA, and Tony Robinson who’s now back at Bedmax after life-saving surgery.

Tony, Bedmax’s production development manager, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2017 – and underwent a successful lung transplant at The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne 2023.

He has since made a full recovery and is back at work.

Tim and Olivia’s cycle ride will take in all Bedmax’s three production plants, starting at Andover, Hampshire, calling at Caunton, Nottinghamshire, and finishing in Greymare in Northumberland.

It’s just part of the bedding company’s fundraising campaign to support the Freeman Hospital Heart and Lung Transplant Association.

Bedmax staff will be taking part in the Great North Run and hosting coffee mornings and quizzes too.

“I’m proud that Bedmax is supporting Freeman’s research and patient care, and I hope our efforts can help others benefit from the life-saving treatments I received,” said Tony.

Ahead of his 400-mile cycle, Tim added: “Tony’s journey has shown us all just how important the work of Freeman Hospital is, and we are committed to doing everything we can to help others who are facing similar challenges.”
