“I was that pony-mad kid,” she tells three million listeners.
Dual Grand National winning trainer Lucinda Russell credits PONY magazine for helping influence her early interest in everything equine.
As a youngster, her bedroom walls were covered in “posters ripped out of PONY magazine” she told listeners of Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs last Friday.
“I was that pony-mad kid,” added Lucinda, who eventually got her first pony aged ten.
She went on to train this year’s Grand National winner Corach Rambler. Her previous victory in the race came in 2017 with One For Arthur.
Talking to presenter Lauren Laverne, Lucinda also discusses flying the flag for Scottish racing, working and living with her partner Peter Scudamore and explains how horse racing is addressing welfare issues.
She speaks about horses with great insight, common sense and affection.
Desert Island Discs is available on BBC Sounds.
