But an alternative is available.

Bags of molassed sugar beet shreds – a popular horse feed for many years – will no longer be available from the major supplier.

Trident has ceased production after being unable to overcome “operational challenges.”

However, the company is continuing to supply the same product in 6mm pellet form, branded Supabeet.

“It is with deep regret that we have had to finally bring to an end our production of molassed bag shreds,” said Alistair Jackson, national sales manager of Trident, the Peterborough based division of AB Agri.

Producing the shredded bagged sugar beet feed presented various handling difficulties, he added. These include managing the fine dust created and preventing it being inhaled by operatives.

Another stumbling block was how the product settles, incurring wrapping problems for modern pallet stacking at distribution hubs.

“It is principally due to these health and safety issues we have had to cease production,” said Alistair.
